Punchhi PicCHANDIGARH, 18 JUNE 2015: Former Chief Justice of India, Mr Justice Madan Mohan Punchhi expired last night and his cremation took place today in Cremation Ground of Sector 25, Chandigarh. All the dignitaries attended this cremation and prayed for the peace to the departed soul. At this hour of grief, Governor of Chhattisgarh Sh. Balramji Das Tandon, Governor of Punjab and Haryana Prof. Kaptan Singh Solanki, Chief Minister of Punjab S. Parkash Singh Badal & Chief Minister of Haryana Sh. Manohar Lal Khattar, also attended this cremation.

Chief Justice of Punjab Haryana High Courts, SSP Chandigarh Daljit Singh, different Judges of Punjab and Haryana High Courts and District Courts including former judges, and BJP Office Bearers, Executive Members, District Presidents, Mandal Presidents of Chandigarh BJP, Councillors and Former Central Minister Sh. Pawan Kumar Bansal, Mayor Poonam Sharma, Ashok Bhan, and President of National Sikh Sangat also attended this ceremony and prayed for the peace to the departed soul.

Pertinent to mention here that Justice Punchhi was not feeling well for the last couple of days and admitted in the PGI for treatment. Yesterday evening when the news of his demise came out, all well wishers started extending their condolences to his son in law and State President BJP Chandigarh Sh. Sanjay Tandon and large number of people started visiting his residence.

82 years old Justice Madan Mohan Punchhi was born at Pakpattan, Distt. Montgomery now in Pakistan on 10th October, 1933 in the house of a famous advocate Sh. Nand Lal Punchhi. Early schooling at Sacred Heart School, Amritsar. Passed Matric at Arya High School, Pakpattan at the age of 13. After partition, migrated to Ferozepore. Graduated from D.A.V. College, Jullundur. Thereafter obtained Degree in Bachelor of Laws and Certificate of Proficiency from Department of Laws, Delhi University in the year 1955.

After obtaining the degree in law, he joined the legal profession with his father at Ferozepore in 1955. Shifted to the High Court of Punjab at Chandigarh in 1958.

Practiced Civil, Criminal, Revenue, Land Tenures and Writ matters at the High Court level till he was appointed an additional Judge of the High Court on 24 Oct 1979. Became a permanent Judge on 16 Dec 1982. Was later elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 6 Oct 1989. Was then appointed as Chief Justice of India on 18 Jan 1998. Justice Punchhi retired from the ‘Highest Chair of Law’ of the country after an illustrious career on 9 Oct 1998. Later, he was given the onerous task of Chairman, Committee of Centre-State Relations by the Government of India from April 2007 to May 2010. During his professional career, Justice Punchhi also taught as Part-time Lecturer in the Department of Laws, Punjab University, Chandigarh. He also served as Public Prosecutor and Standing Counsel for the Chandigarh Administration.

Justice Punchhi was keenly interested in farming and had his own flock of high bred Cattle. He was also an avid reader of the scriptures; excerpts from which often found place in his landmark judgments. He was an ardent devotee of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. His devotion and humble spirit is a message for many.

Justice Punchhi was happily married to Mrs. Meera Punchhi who passed away in 2011. They are survived by 2 sons and 2 daughters. Elder son, Amit Punchhi, married to Preeti is a Senior Corporate Executive. Ashu Punchhi married to Pooja is an Advocate. Elder daughter Madhu is married to Advocate Pawan Mutneja. Younger daughter Priya is married to Sanjay Tandon, Chairman of Competent Group, who is also President, BJP Chandigarh.
